Overview This paper discusses the current status of federal CIOs at major departments and agencies. The objectives of this paper are to describe the responsibilities of agency CIOs and their reporting relationships, the current CIOs' professional backgrounds and the tenures of all of the CIOs in office since enactment of the Clinger-Cohen Act, and what the CIOs viewed as their major challenges.
