The World Bank's Approach to Analytical Work on Public Financial Management

Overview Public financial management (PFM) is an essential part of the development process. Sound PFM ensures accountability and efficiency in the management of public resources, which are critical to the achievement of public policy objectives, including achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In recent years, the World Bank has greatly expanded the attention it pays to PFM in client countries, and PFM has become one of the most prominent issues in the broader initiative to harmonize practices and procedures across the donor community. The Bank's support to country PFM reform programs has increased in all areas of the Bank's lending operations as well as through selected grant programs.
