DFID Rural and Urban Development Case Study - Bangladesh
Overview Bangladesh is one of the least urbanised countries in south Asia and features densely populated rural areas composed of clustered villages that develop near roadways. Industrial development and agrarian distress has drawn migrants to a number of urban areas. Bangladesh faces many challenges in alleviating poverty. Urbanisation, if combined with greater education and access to financial capital, can help improve the circumstances of the urban poor. They must also be given the resources necessary to take full advantage of the economic opportunities that liberalisation can offer.
