Online Delivery of Programmes: A Case Study of IGNOU

Overview This paper describes various issues and concerns experienced in the launching of online delivery at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). First, distinguishing features of IGNOU are explained, in terms of significance, establishment, instructional system, academic programmes and modes of programme delivery. Various parameters that led to the initiation of online delivery of programmes in addition to the traditional print-based (offline) distance education programmes are given next, followed by the sequence of events in the emergence of the current format of delivery. This online programme delivery initiative has special consequences for IGNOU, learners and the delivery mechanism; these are explained next.
