It details the evolution of the concept focusing on an integrated sequence of high-quality learning to: enhance student learning experiences; provide greater accessibility by removing barriers of time and space; deliver learning opportunities to participants around the world on a conventional university semester schedule; develop learning cohorts representing many cultures and nationalities; foster active and substantial participation in the learning process; provide multiple pathways to learning; and facilitate the development of a world-wide community of learners.
