Metro Ethernet Network Case Study Brief

Overview KT (formerly Korea Telecom); is the world's ninth largest telecommunications service provider, and largest Broadband Services provider. Recognizing that the metro is the next point of growth for networking, KT began building "Ntopia", its ambitious project to deliver next generation, Ethernet-based services over unused fiber-optic cable to over 5 million subscribers in roughly 80,000 dwelling units housed within Korea's large-scale apartment complexes. Among the first deployments of its kind in Asia, Ntopia will enable KT to offer an extensive suite of IP-based services, including on-demand bandwidth provisioning, virtual private network (VPN) applications for home and office connectivity, and virtual leased lines (VLLs), relying on Riverstone's metro multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) implementation to anchor these services. Korea Telecom uses a mixture of Ethernet in the last mile and SONET/SDH uplinks to provide high-speed optical access to its customers.
