Overview The paper presents how the GSM infrastructure is meant to evolve to support the introduction of 3G services and act as a base for UMTS deployment. In addition, the paper highlights some of the challenges that the operator is facing and how Nortel Networks is addressing them. As the handset is transforming from a simple voice device to a voice and video multimedia mini-computer, the GSM/EDGE access network is challenged to deliver more bits per second per Hertz in a reduced footprint.
