Encryption Essential to Meet Information Security and Compliance Initiatives

Overview California's unique notice of security breach act (frequently called "S.B. 1386") and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999 (also known as "The Financial Services Modernization Act") are two major laws that have made the encryption of private financial and health data an important, cost-effective "safe harbor" for corporations and government agencies that collect and manage personal data. This paper summarizes these major initiatives, as well as Sarbanes-Oxley and the health insurance portability and accountability act (HIPAA), and identifies the important function that encryption plays in protecting against expensive customer notification requirements.
