Dr. Douglass' Guided Tour Through the Wonderland of Systems Engineering, UML and Rhapsody
Overview The UML provides two different kinds of behavioral diagrams - diagrams that show dynamic interactions of multiple elements and diagrams that show the behavior of an element in isolation. The former are called interaction diagrams and the most common and useful form is the sequence diagram. Interaction diagrams show how a set of elements interact over time, and provide an extremely useful guide to exactly how the elements shown in a structural diagram interact dynamically. For behavior of individual elements, statecharts and their cousin, activity charts, are used. Both of these diagrams can depict the behavior of a UML Classifier, including class, subsystem, component, or use case. In addition, activity charts are often used to show the algorithmic behavior of operations.
