Contactless Chips and Border Operations: A Realistic Assessment

Overview The international community has placed significant emphasis recently on the promise of Contactless Integrated Circuit Chips for the enhancement of border security in modernized Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) and other Machine Readable Travel Documents (MRTDs). Significantly, at the May 2003 meeting of the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a number of resolutions were passed regarding the incorporation of biometrics into MRPs and MRTDs, using Contactless Chip technologies as the ICAO-recommended medium of choice for incorporation of these biometrics "in the interests of global interoperability and sufficient storage space".
