United States Immigration Law in a World of Terror
Overview The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 have spurred a burst of interest in United States immigration laws. Immediately after the attacks, the news media filled with reports that the terrorists had entered the United States on student visas, Immigration & Naturalization ("INS") border officials and State Department consular officers had failed to screen them closely, and, once they were in the United States, INS had failed to track terrorists who violated the terms of their visas. Many elected officials and commentators called for immediate changes in US immigration laws to lessen the likelihood of future terrorist attacks.
