Overview The terrorist attack on America on September 11, 2001, represents an epic event in American history, one that compares to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. September 11's parallel to Pearl Harbor, however, extends beyond strategic and tactical surprise and the loss of thousands of American lives a few hours after dawn. Looking back at Pearl Harbor, it seems clear that but for chance and a critical loss of nerve by the Japanese commander, the attack would have been far more devastating to America than it actually was.
