Online Backup for Microsoft SQL Server 2000

Overview Online backups are favored by many database administrators because they’re run during normal transaction processing and therefore do not require a separate backup window. The main drawback to running online backups, however, is that they can consume significant CPU resources and degrade transaction throughput. For this white paper, the online backup and restore capabilities of SQL Server 2000 were tested on a Compaq ProLiant DL760 server configured with Compaq AIT 50/100 tape drives. The experimenters measured transaction rates during online backups using medium, heavy, very heavy, and nonexistent OLTP workloads. This paper reveals the results of those tests.
