Deployed in the U.S.A.: The Creeping Militarization of the Home Front
Overview The U.S. military is the most effective fighting force in human history; it is so effective, in fact, that some federal officials have come to see it as a panacea for domestic security problems posed by the terrorist threat. But on the home front, there are many tasks for which the military is ill suited, and for which its deployment would be profoundly unwise. The soldier's mission, as soldiers often phrase it, is "killing people and breaking things." In contrast, police officers, ideally, are trained to operate in an environment where constitutional rights apply and to use force only as a last resort.
