Overview After a number of false dawns of alternative wireless broad band technologies outside the main stream focus of UMTS / W-CDMA / 3G, there has been growing debate in the telecom industry of whether a new generation of wireless technologies like 802.16 (WiMAX), UMTS-TDD, Flarion/802.20 can help to create a disruptive impact by allowing a range of new entrants into the industry at a structurally lower cost. The aim of this paper is to explore the technical viability of these various new technologies and, as such, assess their ability to disrupt the market.
