An Introduction to the World Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) Forum

Overview The Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) Forum was created with the purpose of advancing the broadband wireless market through the use of a global standard and ensuring the compliance of vendors' point-to-multipoint systems, subsystems and components. With the recent approval of the IEEE 802.16 WirelessMAN air interface standard, Forum members have already begun efforts to define system profiles and to plan for compliance testing initiatives. This paper is meant to provide prospective members and other interested organizations with a brief history of IEEE's high frequency broadband wireless standards efforts, an understanding of the impact of the new global standard and specification, and information about the WiMAX organization, current and near-term activities.
