Transportation Security White Papers

New Airport Security Law Will Impact Ports

Overview On November 19, the President signed the Airport and Transportation Security Act. Although the bill is mainly focused on making improvements to airport security, it establishes a new office within the Department of Transportation (DOT) to handle transportation security. This new Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will be responsible for security for all modes of transportation, including maritime, and will be headed by a new Under Secretary. The TSA will have personnel and management flexibility in carrying out its functions, including the new federal workforce to handle airport security screening.
