Strategic Effects of Conflict With Iraq: Southeast Asia
Overview War with Iraq signals the beginning of a new era in American national security policy and alters strategic balances and relationships around the world. The specific effects of the war, though, vary from region to region. In some, America's position will be strengthened. In others, it may degrade without serious and sustained efforts. The general consensus on what constitutes Southeast Asia is the region covered by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The ten members of ASEAN are Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
