Idtechex Case Study: Boat Theft Prevention, Germany

Overview Germany has 660,000 small recreational boats of which 560,000 are registered and insured and about 100,000 in use but unregistered. Around 2,000 of these boats are stolen each year, 95 per cent of which are never recovered and with an average value of 30,000 Euros each the cost of boat theft in Germany is now running at around 60 million Euros. A new and innovative smart label system based on Philips Semiconductors' ICODE technology now protects the boats against theft and provides secure electronic identification. There are many benefits to mark and identify the boats in a way that cannot be compromised as well as providing absolute authenticity of ownership.
