Idtechex Case Study: Hong Kong Octopus, Hong Kong

Overview The client is Creative Star, a joint venture company. The Hong Kong 'Octopus' intermodal transport ticketing system was launched by Creative Star, a joint venture company formed by the Mass Transit Railway (MTR), Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR), Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB), Citybus and the Hong Kong and Yaumati Ferry's Peng Chau service. Customers are offered a choice of an anonymous card or a personalised card. To obtain an anonymous card, passengers pay the initial stored value for the card, together with a refundable deposit of $6.50 (HK$50). This deposit covers the cost of the card and enables the card to carry a negative value of up to $4.50. Customers can recharge their cards at any time with varying amounts.
