Architectural Considerations for Presence and Instant Messaging Infrastructure: Comparing XMPP and SIP/SIMPLE
Overview Two groups within the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) have been actively working to make interoperability a reality by defining open protocols for IM and presence: the XMPP Working Group and the SIMPLE Working Group. This white paper provides an analysis and comparison of the technologies produced by these IETF Working Groups: the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), which is now complete, and SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence (SIMPLE), which is still under development.
