Performance Analysis of IEEE 802.16a in Mesh Operation Mode

Overview The IEEE working group 802.16 has specified the air-interface for second generation Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN) to provide high-data rate network connections to fixed stations. This standard is investigated in the WINNER project as benchmark for an advanced radio interface to be developed. This paper gives an overview on the frame structure designed to support multi-hop communications. A throughput evaluation on the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer is provided by means of an analytical approach. An example scenario is also considered in order to remark the performance of centralized and distributed scheduling mode. Simulation results validate the analytical derivation when the centralized scheduling is applied.
