From Telethon to Decrypthon: A Human, Technological and Scientific Challenge

Overview The Association Francaise contre les Myopathies (AFM) had the challenge to speed up understanding of genetic disorders and hasten the development of new therapies. AFM made use of leading-edge technology - Grid Computing or Internet distributed computing - implemented by IBM to tackle huge calculations: comparing each of the 500,000 known proteins in the living world one by one. As a result the calculations were completed in record time - two months - and at minimal cost by unifying the spare computing capability of 75,000 PCs.
