Overview Every year a significant amount of IT budget is spent on new business-critical applications – from enterprise resource planning and accounting software to customer relationship management and web based self-service systems. However, a high proportion of these projects repeatedly fail to deliver the promised business benefits or desired return on investment. In fact, according to the Standish Group, three-quarters of big IT projects are classed as failures. Commonly, the IT department finds itself under considerable pressure from senior management to reduce the time-to-market for new architectures or applications, in order to achieve a fast payback on the investment made. In response, applications are often hurriedly deployed on ageing legacy systems without thorough testing and integration. The result is poor application performance and in the worst instances, systems failure – impacting on staff productivity and customer service levels. It can also prove a high visibility failure for the IT function – restricting investment by the business in future IT projects.
