Cisco White Paper: How to Configure Cisco's Core SIP Products

Overview The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a signaling protocol used to negotiate, establish, and terminate multimedia sessions such as voice calls. It is a peer-to-peer technology, similar to H.323, where endpoints possess the capability to initiate and receive sessions without the assistance of a call-processing agent such as those used with the Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP) and Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP). This paper introduces the core components of a SIP network and explains how to configure them.
