Making Universal Broadband Access a Reality

Overview The link between the end user and the public network is key to the delivery of broadband applications for residential and business subscribers. Invariably, these applications rely on Ethernet to pass from user to user. The forthcoming Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) standard will specify the protocols and interfaces for the use of Ethernet over this link as a first-mile or access network technology. This white paper discusses the advantages of EFM, the three EFM technologies being proposed, and EFM's deployment and application opportunities. Additionally, the paper introduces the EFMA, its role in promoting Ethernet in the First Mile, and the IEEE standards process.
