Ultracapacitors as Energy Buffers in a Multiple Zone Electrical Distribution System
Overview Today ultracapacitors are proving to be useful as high power energy accumulators in hybrid electric power trains. The Nissan super-capacitor truck, Condor, is powered by a 7.0 liter CIDI engine rated at 152 kW in parallel hybrid architecture with a 55 kW permanent magnet motor. The Condor super-capacitor bank is capable of an impressive 6.3 Wh/kg and has a P/E of 80. Honda Motor Co. has applied ultracapacitors as high power buffers to the fuel cell stack used in their FCX line of hybrid vehicles commencing with the FCX-V3 in 2000. Honda maintains the use of ultracapacitors in the FCX line including the V4 introduced in 2001, and on through the most recent introduction of FCX in 2003.
