Ultracapacitor Assisted Electric Drives for Transportation

Overview Vehicle introduction of electric drives has primarily been for traction applications having power ratings of 30 kW to 60 kW and higher for hybrid and battery electric vehicles. Power train electrification on the other hand has lagged due to fierce price constraints exacerbated by the need for dual voltage networks to support both existing electronics and future higher power functions. Traditional solutions based on the use of a second battery are generally unable to make a business case for acceptance. Therefore it is necessary to explore in greater depth the option of distributed power modules based on ultracapacitor energy storage.
