CISCO Case Study: GigaPort

Overview In 1999, the Dutch government inaugurated GigaPort, an ambitious technology-based research program designed to stimulate economic growth within the country. The Dutch government and the Internet community demanded that SURFnet become the most advanced research network possible. Academics, in particular, were chomping at the bit for an innovative network that would allow them to stretch the boundaries of their research and development work. To support the high level of application development that the government, academic, and business communities were striving for, it was apparent that the existing network, known as SURFnet4, had to be replaced with a completely new network. By embracing IPv6, SURFnet is now on the road to developing a host of high-powered Internet applications, such as top-quality video on a large scale.
