Hitachi Storage at Work Case Study: Federal Austrian Railways (Osterreichischen Bundesbahnen, OBB)
Overview As the central computing centre of OBB, the Data Service Centre (DSC) is responsible for providing mission-critical information services. The DSC has experienced a massive growth in data. In 1998, total disk capacity was approximately 1.8TB. Since then it has grown to 17.2TB and no end to this growth is in sight. The DSC's first phase of storage consolidation, using a SAN (Storage Area Network) for all platforms, delivered impressive reductions in TCO. The DSC anticipates that by combining SAN and NAS, they will achieve further reductions in TCO through the benefits of synergy and economies of scale in infrastructure management.
