SANs White Papers
The Ohio State University Newark and Central Ohio Technical College
Overview The shared Newark campus of The Ohio State University (OSU) and Central Ohio Technical College(COTC) provides its growing student population with leading-edge IT services using Dell storage, wireless and network equipment. The common campus had a need to improve campus IT infrastructure to accommodate massive student population growth; offer network storage space and e-mail accounts to attract students to the institution; provide wireless support for faculty, staff, and students; and eliminate wired network bottleneck to the Internet. With Dell, the campus consolidated storage using a storage area network(SAN) with a Dell/EMC CX400 Fibre Channel storage array; supplied faculty with IEEE 802.11b-compliant Dell notebooks equipped with Dell TrueMobile technology; and equipped Dell PowerEdge servers with Gigabit Ethernet1 cards to support a 10 Gigabit Ethernet switched backbone and Gigabit Ethernet technology up to the desktop level. As a result, the combined campus enjoys improved data security and a reduced number of servers needed for IT functions; ample data and e-mail storage space for students; mobility and convenience through wireless computing; and improved collaboration with other universities thanks to leading-edge network speed and throughput for distance-learning courses.
