Linux - Open Source White Papers
CBS SportsLine.com
Overview For many sports fans, SportsLine.com is a one-stop shop of all things sports. Founded in 1994, SportsLine.com offers a variety of sports information, news, sports merchandise, and even fantasy leagues, in which fans can create their own "dream teams" of players and track their teams' statistics. In addition to its flagship Web site—CBS SportsLine.com—the company also produces sites for the NFL, the PGA TOUR, and the NCAA championships. The goal for CBS Sportsline: to meet the increasing demands of customers for increased Sportsline.com site interactivity; increase system scalability to handle increasing traffic while keeping costs to a minimum. To do this, Sportsline.com worked with Dell to deploy a scalable and affordable infrastructure that includes Dell PowerEdge servers and the Red Hat Linux operating system to replace costly RISC-based servers. As a result, Sportsline.com sees improved customer satisfaction because of increased site interactivity, ability to handle sharp jumps in traffic, and decreased acquisition costs of hardware.
