Dell OpenManage IT Assistant
Overview Dell is the world's leading computer systems company. Dell does business directly with customers, one at a time, and believes it does so better than anyone else on the planet. Dell had a problem: its flagship network manage-ment application's user interface ran on a Java Virtual Machine that Microsoft would not be able to support in the future. The solution? Upgrade to Visual J#.NET. Dell OpenManage IT Assistant user interface was built in Microsoft Visual J++, and ran on the Microsoft Java VM (MSJVM), which Microsoft can no longer support after September 2004. Dell needed an alternative solution. The challenge for Dell: port the user interface to Microsoft Visual J# .NET using the Visual J# Upgrade Wizard, part of Visual Studio .NET 2003; use Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, and Visual J# .NET— all running on Dell PowerEdge Servers. As a result, most of the code ported with no modifications required; the application compiled after 1 day of porting work; the ported application was feature-complete after 2 weeks; the application tested and released to market within 3 months.
