High Performance Computing White Papers
CSIRO - May 2004
Overview CSIRO's study in the field of bioinformatics has been propelled forward with the installation of a dedicated high performance computing cluster, built using low cost Dell servers clustered together running SuSe Linux. The challenge for CSIRO was to provide CSIRO scientists, located around the country, with ready access to a single, secure and powerful computing resource that would centralise their research on the human genome, protein structures and other practices within the growing field of bioinformatics. With space limitations and operational costs a consideration, the CSIRO followed Dell's advice to build a High Performance Computing Cluster (HPCC) built on industry standard, rack dense 'blade' servers. The HPCC was built using 66 Dell PowerEdge 1655 blade servers along with 3 PowerEdge 2650 dual processor servers, all running SuSe Linux, installed in a single 19" rack. By centralising the cluster, CSIRO scientists now have access to a single computing resource that allows them to readily share their findings and schedule tasks from remote locations. The new technology on which the cluster is built is very energy efficient; administration is streamlined and overall operational costs have been reduced.
