User-Mode Interactions: Guidelines for Kernel-Mode Drivers
Overview Many kernel-mode drivers for the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems must interact with user-mode components by sharing data, objects, and handles; passing notification and synchronization information; and using settings and properties supplied by a user. This paper provides guidelines for designing and implementing these interactions. A driver that is closely coupled with a user-mode application should be designed so that either the application initiates communication by calling the driver or the driver uses a kernel-mode mechanism, such as Plug and Play (PnP) notification, to initiate the communication.
