IBM Case Study: Department of Trade and Industry, Oil & Gas Directorate

Overview The Oil & Gas Directorate's overall aim is to maximise the economic benefit to the United Kingdom of its oil and gas resources, taking into account the environmental impact of hydrocarbon development, and the need to ensure secure, diverse and sustainable supplies of energy at competitive prices. Legal requirements dictate the need to provide governments in the UK and elsewhere with regular reports on operational activities by the oil & gas industry. These reports cover environmental data, regular production reports and a series of other information with respect to exploration activities and well operation. The e-government initiative in the UK has already yielded some significant results in achieving automation and streamlined processes in the interaction between government departments and businesses. One of the focus areas has been the introduction of XML as a standard technology, which is required as part of the data and document exchange.
