Omsan Logistics: Turkey's Fast-Growing Leader Drives Ahead With Intel Itanium 2 Processor
Overview Omsan Logistics, a leading Turkish logistics company, aims to keep ahead of its rivals on flexibility, efficiency and cost-effectiveness by deploying state-of-the-art technology in areas such as transportation, warehousing and customs clearance. It also wants to offer new and differentiated services across Europe. A new RISC-based IT system designed to support these innovations was causing data bottlenecks and other severe problems, slowing down processes and necessitating daily system restarts. This undermined Omsan's ability to access critical internal and customer information across its pan-European distribution network. Processes such as closing the financial period took three or four days, and users were dissatisfied. Omsan decided to upgrade the main database and application server and began looking for a solution in September 2003. To boost performance, Omsan deployed separate Intel architecture-based servers to run its database and applications. Initially, it installed Intel Xeon DP servers running Linux to support the main system. Then it implemented HP Integrity Itanium 2-based servers for critical systems and high performance needs, and Intel Xeon processor-based servers for applications servers delivering an overall optimized price-performance solution architecture.
