Sun Microsystems Case Study: Beaumont Hospital
Overview Located in Dublin, Beaumont is a major academic teaching hospital. Always keen to exploit the practical advantages of emerging technologies, in early 2000 the hospital was on the look out for a robust long-term solution to the growing challenge of image storage and retrieval. It decided to adopt a fully digital environment that could handle all of its medical images. But for Beaumont, installation of a complete computed radiography (CR) environment, in which all medical images are digitally generated, was prohibitively expensive. Instead, a cost-effective digital storage solution was urgently needed to cope with the growing number of images coming out of the radiography department's newly acquired digital imaging devices. That is when the hospital approached Sun Microsystems to solve its immediate digital storage needs and to help with the hospital's overall digital strategy implementation. The solution comprises three components: a Sun Fire V880 server, supplied by Sun under its Sun Academic.
