A Fair and Efficient Resource Management Scheme to Support Transient Data Recovery for Migrating Users in Wireless Multicast Networks

Overview Deployment of the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and rapid development of Universal Mobile Telecommunications Services (UMTS) have been driven by increasing demand for high-speed wireless Internet access. At the same time, there is growing interest in multicast-based Internet applications, such as audio and video streaming, audio-visual conferencing, and computer supported group communications and cooperative work. In a packet-switched cellular wireless multicast network such as GPRS/UMTS, multicast traffic is statistically multiplexed with other user traffic on the downlink, and the multicast streams in adjacent cells may not be synchronized due to buffering at the base station. This paper presents a Fair and Efficient Wireless Multicast resource management Scheme (FEWMS) that effectively addresses this problem.
