IBM Case Study: Finnair

Overview During the spring of 2003, Finnair teamed with an IBM Innovation Center to perform a study of the potential applications and benefits of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology in the airline's information technology (IT) environment. The study identified several areas in which RFID technology could improve processes, such as parts and tools tracking, trolley tracking, personnel management, automated passenger check-in and baggage handling. Finnair was eager to initiate widespread use of RFID to stay ahead of the competition, but decided to delay further action until the best standards and options emerged.
