Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) Limitations for GPRS and EDGE Handsets
Overview Based on SAR measurements from a GSM/GPRS handset, extensions are made to estimate SAR limitations for handset products at various data rates. It is found that low-band EDGE handsets can operate at the nominal power-class E2 level with 4 uplink slots (EGPRS class-12) while staying within SAR limits. Operating at the high end of power-class E2, 2 uplink slots (EGPRS class-10) can be used. EGPRS class-29 (8 uplink slots) meets the SAR requirements when operating at the lower-power end of power-class E2. These characteristics nominally hold for operation in the higher frequency bands as well. This paper examines one handset configuration.
