3M Case Study: Passing the Test
Overview In January 2000, after years of trying to efficiently manage various library collections in the face of chronic staff shortages, Mary McMahon took a new job as director of the library. An ardent fan of 3M Digital Materials Flow Management (MFM) and with several 3M SelfCheck and Detection Systems already proving invaluable, McMahon began seeking similar efficiencies in the staff?s critical, but "off-desk" tasks. To get started, 3M loaned the library two 3M Digital Conversion Stations, along with three 3M Staff Workstations, one 3M Digital Library Assistant (DLA) and one 3M SelfCheck System. First-phase installation began in July 2000 and by August, was nearly complete - that is, 27,000 high-demand items from the children's collection, multimedia and "best sellers" were converted to 3M RFID Tags from the old optical bar codes. Library volunteers placed most of the tags.
