Oddbins Case Study: From Cellar to the Seller

Overview Oddbins introduced a radically unpretentious way of buying wine by the case. Its shops are informal, staffed by keen graduates who are put through the various levels of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) training. Customers are encouraged to taste wines in the shop, venture into unknown territory (oenologically speaking) and to become loyal 'Oddbinites'. Oddbins is currently working on introducing a new merchandising system (JDA MMS), using IBM AS400s to replace the existing legacy system. Part of the system will be a new warehouse management system to replace the current paper-based procedures. Due to go live in Spring 1999, the WMS system will interface to a Symbol Spectrum24 wireless local area network (WLAN) and Symbol intelligent RF terminals to provide real-time warehouse administration and inventory control.
