Iowa Hospital Meets HIPAA Compliance Guidelines With Firewall Solution
Overview A key component of the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) calls for hospitals to have in place by April 2005 security standards that prevent improper electronic access to patients' health information. For hospitals such as Clarke County in Iowa, this security issue superseded many other administrative concerns. In need of help, Clarke County turned to Heartland Technology Solutions (HTS), a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner. HTS recommended updating Clarke County's network to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and implementing Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004 as an enterprise firewall. As a result, the hospital has a new security solution that helps reduce the time for medical diagnosis, helps increase hospital productivity by 30 percent, and, most importantly, helps ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations.
