Perspective on Open Source Software (OSS) vs. Commercial Proprietary Software
Overview Although software that has been unencumbered by intellectual property restrictions (or at least enforced restrictions) has been freely developed and shared since software was created, it is only within the last few years that the phenomenon most widely known as “open source” has emerged to challenge the traditional proprietary software business model. While some believes that the use of open source software will become increasingly ubiquitous throughout the Global 2000 for the foreseeable future, it is up for debate whether or not OSS will prevail over proprietary products, where intellectual property will be the primary competitive differentiator amongst players in the industry.
