Windows Data Alignment on IPF, x86, and x86-64

Overview Intel and AMD have introduced a family of processors, the Intel Itanium Processor Family (IPF) Architecture and the AMD x86-64 Architecture. These processors join the IA-32 Intel Architecture family in the Microsoft Windows desktop/server world. Proper data alignment allows to get the most out of 64- and 32-bit applications - and on the Itanium, it's often not only a matter of performance, but can be a matter of correctness. This paper explains why one should care about data alignment, the costs if you do not, how to get your data aligned, and what to do when you cannot.
