Cyberonics Develops a Pocket PC-Based Solution to Reduce Costs and Administration Complexity
Overview While the NCP System represents a great advance for epilepsy patients and for the clinicians treating them, the programming system had its drawbacks. In its initial design, the system was expensive for Cyberonics because it entailed giving away the relatively costly laptop computers used to monitor and adjust the settings of the NCP system. For clinicians, the laptops were awkward to carry, prone to breakage, and sometimes difficult to open and use in small offices. To improve the overall usefulness of the NCP System, Houston-based Cyberonics looked for a mobile solution. They found it in the Microsoft Windows for Pocket PC platform. Cyberonics worked with Microsoft Solution Provider ESX Engineering to create a Windows Powered mobile solution that is a simpler, faster, and much more cost-effective means for doctors and nurses to help epilepsy patients.
