BlackBerry Case Study: British Nuclear Fuels Plc (BNFL)
Overview BNFL recognizes that better management of email and improved access to corporate data can have a dramatic impact on employee productivity. Part of BNFL IT Manager Steve Davies' role is to keep abreast of the latest technology developments that could cut costs, maximize efficiency and improve service. They saw immediately the potential of Research In Motion's BlackBerry wireless solution, which would enable 'down time' to be converted into productive time. With the ability to integrate existing applications on to the BlackBerry Wireless Handheld, employees would not only be able to receive and send emails, they could manage their diaries instantly regardless of their physical location. They decided to set up a three-month pilot to review BlackBerry, which comprised 20 BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds and BlackBerry Enterprise Server software for IBM Lotus Domino, which provides centralized management and control, as well as a number of sophisticated functions such as monitoring a user's mail box for new mail and applying filters.
