Softricity Case Study: University of Applied Science Technikum Wien

Overview As an advanced technical school, Technikum Wien wanted to ensure that its 1,750 students had the latest technology available and could easily do their work, whenever and wherever they may be. The university had 250 desktop computers, but they also wanted to provide each student with a laptop computer that had critical software applications readily available. However, with only five staff managing their entire IT infrastructure, it would have been extremely difficult — if not impossible — to support such a large group of mobile users and their more than 20 highly diverse applications. Technikum Wien needed an innovative and efficient way to manage rich applications across a fleet of laptops. Because neither server-based computing nor ESD could meet all their needs, Technikum Wien decided — on advice from Austrian Distributor LANe Solutions — to implement Softricity's SoftGrid application virtualization platform. SoftGrid would enable it to centrally deploy and update all of its applications on all 1,750 laptops.
