Intel Itanium 2: Initial Performance Results Are Compelling
Overview This paper describes initial performance results of Intel Itanium 2. The first sets of benchmarks released by Intel show that the next-generation product is a horse of a different color. Performance benchmarks are overwhelmingly better than the previous generation Itanium. Intel supplied benchmark data shows the new 1.0GHz Itanium 2 delivering performance ranging from 1.7 to 2.6 times the performance of the previous generation Itanium at 0.8GHz, and by Giga?s estimates from 1.3 times to more than twice the performance of the 1.6GHz Xeon 32-bit processors.
